Hi all. My mother-in-law asked me to see if I could find her a cable modem she could buy so she does not have to keep renting the one from Time Warner. They raised her rate by $1.50/month and which is straw that broke the camel’s back for her.

Anyway, I don’t know anything about cable modems and whether she needs a specific type to replace the one she has. She uses is solely for internet access - no cable, no phone service. A stand alone WIFI router is the only thing attached to it. The one Time Warner provided is a SURFboard SB5101 but it seems that this model is no longer available.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I don’t know which of these specs are important. My understanding is some routers offer built in WIFI and other features. I think she needs just the most basic cable modem there is. Is there different protocols or whatever, like mobile phone services that I need to be aware of so I get the right one? What about Time Warner - is the Time Warner specific requirements for their service?

She is looking for cheap with no frills. I’d love some specific model suggestions that are comparable.

Thanks 0pponauts.

lol TWC sucks

they tried to charge my sister $8 a month for a *ROUTER* and I ended up buying her a TPLink wireless N router for $20 instead.

Get one of these and whatever wireless router you want and she will be golden.

these are literally the exact same things that TWC and Comcast rent out, but they do them for $15/mo. It’s ridiculous.

That one has a max transfer of 30 mbps.

Which is probably more than enough for what she does.

It’s not exactly future proof as it’s an older model but depending on her speed it’s a cheap and guaranteed to work option.

Just make sure she’s not paying for 50mbps internet or something, because if she is she’s screwed with this one.

I use this one:

It’s capable of 150 mbps because it’s DOCSIS-3 certified.

Touch more money to have a lot more future usage.

This is the official list, sorted by download speed (scroll down). But the faster ones are compatible with the slower speeds.
